Nowadaysadvertising aimed at children is on the rise. Some people think this hasnegative effects and should be banned. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
The effectadvertisements have on children has been a source of contention among criticsfor many years now. Children are indeed consumers like everyone else, but theirsusceptibility to manipulation makes them less acceptable recipients ofadvertising propaganda in the eyes of some. To that end, some believe advertsshould not be targeted at young people under any circumstances.
Undoubtedly, children are consumers and it isessential for companies to target this particular market in order to generateinterest in their products. Companies that produce games, toys and other suchitems require children to consume their products in order to generate profitsand thus create jobs. The consequence of job creation has a positive effect onthe economy, leading to greater purchasing power among the general population. Thus, it is essential for advertisers to target children for the good of theeconomy.
Nonetheless, advertisers must act responsiblywhen targeting the child market. Children are impressionable and can easily beinfluenced by false promises or emotional appeals. For example, a product thatclaims to be widely popular among young people will surely boost the emotionalwell being of the particular children who own the said product. Thus, those whodo not possess the product will feel left out and excluded from their socialcircle due to the fact that they cannot participate in activities involving useof the product. In that sense, advertisers must take care not to manipulate theemotions of children, making them believe that they are somehow inferior totheir peers for not owning this popular product.
In conclusion, it is necessary for advertisersto target children in order to benefit the wider economy, but such targetingmust be done in a responsible way so as not to negatively impact uponchildren’s emotions.
