　　As society continues to progress, life becomes more complex and the number of pressures people face grows accordingly. Young people in particular are being affected by these new pressures in ways that are not yet evident and perhaps won’t be until they begin their adult lives.

　　Children face pressure in many areas of life, but perhaps the greatest pressure they face is brought to bear on them by an increasingly exam-focused education system. University education is desired by more people across the world than ever before and, thus, the competition to secure the best higher education places has intensified. Pressure to perform well during exams places a heavy burden on children and their mental health suffers in accordance with this. Additionally, social media and marketing exert pressure on children to develop identities which are consistent with the fads of the day, with online bullying leading to a spike in suicides among teens.

　　The solutions to this are not easy to find. Education standards have arguably fallen as a result of the exam-obsessed education system adopted by many countries across the world. Re-considering education as an end itself rather than a means to an end would be the best way to address this. Educating children to be curious about the world around and to develop critical thinking skills along with inquisitive minds should be the starting point of any education system. Without a radical re-constitution of the way in which children learn, young people’s lives will continue to be affected by needless pressure.

　　Thus, the best way to address the pressures children face is to seek a root-and-branch reform of the entire education system.
