　　Online platforms have provided space for people with shared interests from all over the world to come together in a mutually rewarding environment to discuss and share experiences. Undoubtedly, this technological development has brought immense advantages in this regard, yet some would argue that this trend has emerged at the expense of conventional relationships in which people interact face-to-face.

　　The internet is essentially a global community. People of different races, cultural backgrounds, ages, genders and class can all come together and dissolve these classical barriers to social development and discover common things that unite them. In that sense, the internet is a great unifying concept. It would be wrong to assume that the critics of the internet are altogether correct in their assertion that the worldwide web has had a corrosive effect on society.

　　Nonetheless, there is some truth to the suggestion that the internet has done some damage to conventional relationships and forms of social interaction. Online dating platforms have transformed the way people meet prospective partners, opening people up to a wider number of people that simply those in their local area. Still, such innovations can have negative repercussions for those who use them, with young people perhaps failing to understand how to build relationships in person. Face-to-face communication is essential for any relationship; it is what makes us essentially human. Removing this from the dynamic between two people is a dangerous and regressive development.

　　Thus, I would say that while the emergence of online meeting rooms has been a broadly positive development, it is no replacement for conventional, face-to-face discourse with those around us. In that sense, it is necessary to value those in our immediate vicinity, just as it is to build new relationships through the internet.
