　　Job security has become something of a hot potato issue in recent years, with increasing numbers of young people unable to attain the kind of stable employment afforded to their parents’ generation. The reasons for this are varied and complex, and no apparent solution appears to have been offered by policy makers or governments.

　　The major cause of job insecurity is economic: as wealth inequality widens, so too do job opportunities decline. In order to tackle unemployment, some governments have introduced policies to make labour markets more flexible, thus ensuring work is more precarious and poorly paid. This had led to the rise of the so called ‘gig economy’, where people (predominantly those under 40) seek short-term contracts with minimal to zero job security or employment rights.

　　This is unquestionably a cause for concern and something must be done to address it. Employers now exist in a global economy that is tilted towards guarding their interests at the expense of those they employ, under the guise of facilitating growth and creating jobs. As job security decreases and wages are depressed, an inordinate number of social problems are created, from in-work poverty to civil unrest. In that sense, the trend towards a gig economy has been a disaster.

　　Thus, it is clear that changed economic circumstances have led to young people spending less time in their jobs and the disadvantages of this far outweigh any advantages employers may gain. Something radical must be done to reverse this disturbing trend.
