An increasing number of people are changing careers during their working life. What are the reasons for this? Is it a negative of positive development?

　　In recent years, a growing number of people have foregone the gradual career progress espoused by earlier generations and are forging different careers over the course of their working lives. Arguments abound as to whether this development has been positive or negative. As with most new trends, it is important to look at both sides.

　　One of the main reasons people are changing careers over the course of their working lives is the lack of welfare and job security traditionally associated with long-term employment. Property ownership is something an increasing number of today’s younger generation are being priced out of, thus making the idea of saving for a mortgage redundant. As a consequence, many young people today enjoy a flexibility with regards to work that their parents’ generation did not enjoy. Opportunities to work abroad in a variety of industries are arising as a consequence of changes to the global economy and many young people are seeking such opportunities. The result of this is that they no longer feel bound to any particular career or profession.

　　On the negative side, such a lack of security, especially in relation to housing and pensions, has made the work place a less secure environment than it was several decades ago. People can no longer rely on a “job for life” as previous generations could and are seeing their chances of long-term security evaporate in accordance with these changes. Undoubtedly, this effect of the changing nature of the modern economy is negative. Without basic security for the future, social cohesion is placed in jeopardy.

　　Thus, in conclusion, while people are certainly freer to make decisions about the kinds of careers they pursue than they were in the past, I would lean towards the view that this trend has been broadly negative.
