　　In recent years, major urban areas across the globe have seen a spike in car ownership, which has led to a serious increase in traffic congestion on the roads. Governments are faced with a dilemma in the face of this: accept the widespread increase in car ownership and make policy to accommodate this, or try to turn back the tide and push people towards public transport.

　　The major argument against road building and expansion is environmental. Faced with a potential ecological catastrophe, governments across the world have been forced to confront the reality that rapid industrialisation has led to a series of near-irreversible environmental problems. CO2 emissions from cars and other road vehicles are major contributors to this alarming trend and there are clear arguments against encouraging more widespread car ownership.

　　Nonetheless, as technology permits, an increasing number of car brands are looking at developing vehicles with sustainable or renewable energy sources, from hybrid to electric cars. Such initiatives go some way to reversing the impending terrors of climate change and provide credibility to arguments against relying solely on public transport as a future means of mobility. Even so, such initiatives are still in their nascent stage and it may be some time before car companies are able to offer a 100% “clean car” option for consumers.

　　In conclusion, while I would say that innovations in car technology offer some hope that the future of car ownership is sustainable, until such time occurs governments should do all they can to invest in public transportation for the sake of the environment.
