　　What can be seen are two pictures revealing some noticeable developments of the layout of the first floor of an unknown library during the years between 1995 and now.

　　In the mid-1990s, to the southwest of the entrance located in the south was the area to display the local reference books, while photocopiers were placed oppsitely. Computers without Internet access, in the meanwhile, were installed in the west, whereas the librarian worked in the east. Between them was a small book display area with study tables and chairs and some chairs for newspaper readers, and at the very back were some shelves for reference books and maps.

　　But now, in the southwest, the area has made way to showcase new books, and several chairs have replaced the original computer sector. However, there is no librarian any more. Alternatively, a self-service desk has been placed for book borrowers. In the central place, all the tables and chairs have been removed and the book display area has been moved to the middle and enlarged in size. At the same time, the back of the first floor has been equipped with Internet-accessible computers, which makes it very convenient for the borrowers.

　　Overall, a comparison between them reveals that the library has developed from a traditional one to a more modern and spacious place.

　　Tracing back the history, it is easily to find out that, in a rather long period, our ancestors would prefer to settle down in one place and be afraid of changing, but it is more likely for comtemporary people in millions, if not billions, to move from one residence to another. What has contributed to this trend?

　　One of the most deep-rooted reasons that must be highlighted is the fact that the continuous technological leaps and bounds have equipped those who have got tired of monotonous life with abundant courage to overcome the fear of the unknown. The invention of various faster and faster transportation means, such cars, planes and high speed rail, have significantly bridged the geographic distance between two cities, even countries, for example, it only needs two or three hours to cover a journey of several thousands of miles by plane, which can inevitably lessen people’s psychological distance. Also, the emergence of telephones, mobile phones, and other devices or machines have enabled the new dwellers to ask for help if they are in trouble. With all the help from these equipments, the adventurers have become more courageous to try new lifestyle in a strange place or discover new opportunities to fulfill themselves.

　　Dispite the fact that this changing would unavoidably get people suffered at the very beginning of settling down in a certain place, it brings along more plus points from my perspective than its downsides. One direct benefit would be that a more massive number of people can enlarge their eyesight and have the chance to experience various lives, thus making them have a deeper understanding of the country. More essentially, as an old Chinese saying goes, “when all means are exhausted, changes become necessary, and then changes in turn can make a way out”. That is to say, if we are confined in a limited place, we have few opportunities to achieve our ambitions. If we, instead, can move to a new area, we may embrace new possibilities.

　　In conclusion, when the rapid advance in technology has made the tendency of relocations almost a frequent occurance for plenty of people, they can enjoy more positives from it as well.
