　　All the main languages have been studiedprescriptively, especially in the 18th century approach to the writing ofgrammars and dictionaries.

　　The aims of these early grammarians were threefold:(a) they wanted to codify the principles of their languages, to show that therewas a system beneath the apparent chaos of usage, (b) they wanted a means ofsettling disputes over usage, and (c) they wanted to point out what they feltto be common errors, in order to improve the language. The authoritarian natureof the approach is best characterized by its reliance on rules of grammar. Someusages are prescribed to be learnt and followed accurately; others areproscribed to be avoided.

　　In this early period, there were no half-measures:usage was either right or wrong, and it was the task of the grammarian notsimply to record alternatives, but to pronounce judgment upon them.

　　所有主流语言的研究都是约定俗成的，尤其是在18世纪对语法和词典的编写之中。

　　那些早期的语法学家有三重目标：首先，他们想把语言规则编写成文，借以证明那些看起来混乱的用法有其系统性;其次，他们想找出一种方法来解决语言用法的争论;最后，他们想指出他们所认为的普遍错误以改进语言。这一方式对语法规则的依赖最能体现出其独裁本质。一些用法是规定的，因此必须要学习并严格遵守;另一些用法是错误的，应该被避免。

　　早期并没有折中的衡量方法：用法要么对要么错，而语法家的任务不仅是简单记录这些不同的选择，还要对其进行判断。
