概括段落大意能力(Skimming)：

　　通过略读的方式，对文章的段落的要点获得基本的了解。不要试图去弄明白每一个单词的意思。要从一个 段落跳到另一个段落，并且在跳到下一个段落之前找到每一个段落的要点，就像踩着石头过河一样。段落 的要点常常是—当然并不总是—每段的的第一句。包含要点的句子常被成为“主题句”。所有主题句结合 在一起就会形成这篇文章的概要。

　　The Little Ice Age lasted from roughly 1300 until the middle of the nineteenth century. Only two centuries ago, Europe experienced a cycle of bitterly cold winters: mountain glaciers in the Swiss Alps were the lowest in recorded memory, and pack ice surrounded Iceland for much of the year. The climatic events of the Little Ice Age did more than help shape the modern world. They are the deeply important context for the current unprecedented global warming. The Little Ice Age was far from a deep freeze, however; rather an irregular seesaw of rapid climatic shifts, few lasting more than a quarter-century, driven by complex and still little understood interactions between the atmosphere and the ocean.
