WRITING TASK 1
You should spend about 20 minutes on this task.
The maps show the change of an office building between the present and the future.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
You Should write at least 150 wards.
The floor plans illustrate how a current office building will be upgraded in the future.
At present, lying between two large lawns on its east and west, this office building has two entrances: the main one is opened at the southeast comer, while the side access is facing west. Inside the building, there are four offices in the south side; from the west to east in the north side are a kitchen, a canteen, and a storeroom respectively, with toilets available to employees in the northeast comer.
After the refurbishment, both lawns will be cleared to make room for an outdoor seating area with chairs in the west and the office expansion in the east. As for the internal layout, only will the west entrance and the storeroom remain intact. Another entrance will be moved to the centre of the south side, between two larger offices, while the kitchen and canteen will be converted to offices. The new east wing will be mainly used for meeting with a coffee machine provided next to the relocated toilets in its northeast corner.
Overall, the plan will bring significant external and internal changes to the building with an aim at creating more space for work via expansion and the sacrifice of the outdoor lawns and the indoor catering facilities.
WRITING TASK 2
Researches into new types of medicines and treatments are essential for improving health and dealing with diseases. Who do you think should fund these researches: private companies, individuals or governments?
Illnesses, chronic ones due to unhealthy lifestyles or acute ones caused by viruses or bacteria, have long been one of the greatest threats to humanity throughout history. The key to combat them lies in the financial influx in the research and development of new medicines and treatments, which, in my opinion, should come from both governments and private companies but not individual citizens.
Most ordinary people's monetary resources are too limited to support these research projects. To ensure the quality of clinical researches or testing newly-invented medicines, advanced medical facilities, ranging from sophisticated apparatus to specially-designed medical bases, animal subjects, and pharmaceutical experts are usually required. Yet, all of these are beyond most working persons' affordability. Besides, by paying tax to the country, individuals, in fact, are already contributing their part to this campaign. After all, a certain proportion of the fiscal revenue that can be allocated back to diverse social aspects originates from citizens' income tax.
In comparison to individuals' indirect contribution and pharmaceutical companies' profit-driven business strategies, government funding is more likely to guarantee the benefits of the breakthroughs in pharmaceutical products and health care technologies to the public. Financially supported by fiscal budget, the patents of new vaccines or the therapies are state-owned. In other words, they can be manufactured, priced, and introduced to the market in accordance with taxpayers' interests and affordability rather than for maximizing the monetary gains. In a larger picture, this can not only prevent or control an outbreak of highly contagious epidemic, but also lower the fatality rate simply owing to pricy medicines. In brief governments' participation is an irreplaceable from of welfare to promote citizens quality of life and health.
Despite governments' crucial role, it must be stressed that their budget is not infinite. The financial need for installing the latest equipment and employing world-class pharmaceutical professionals in all medical fields could be enormous and unrealistic for the national treasury to bear merely. For this reason, the investment from the private sector in some reas irrelevant to fatal diseases is a complement. As for the less deadly diseases or health problems, such as influenza and obesity, the cures developed resource-capable companies only offer a more potent alternative to those who could afford, whereas others can still choose to rely on the cheaper or free medical means provided by the state. At the same time, some commercial pharmaceutical or health products, such as anti-aging pills, can be launched to satisfy some customers' demands.
All in all, governments and private companies can exert different effects in pharmaceutical and medical development, so both are essential By contrast, apart from paying tax, what individuals are able to do is relatively insignificant.
