Describe a friend’s home you visited but don’t want to live in. You should say:

  Where the home is

  Who this person is

What kind of home it is

And explain why you don’t want to live there

I’m asked to talk about a friend’s home I visited but don’t want to live in, so I will describe my friend Nancy’s apartment in Songjiang district. Songjiang is an area in the southwest of Shanghai, and it’s very far from the city centre. My friend lives near Sijing, and it takes about an hour and a half for her to arrive at the city centre.

My friend Nancy was actually my classmate in university. We both attended university in Shanghai and met each other in a writing class during freshman year. After graduating from university, both of us stayed in Shanghai, so we still had plenty of opportunities to meet each other and hang out in our free time.

As for what kind of home Nancy lives in, it’s a one-bedroom apartment in a large apartment complex. The apartment contains a small kitchen, a living room, and one bedroom. It’s quite small, and it’s also rather old and not very well maintained. The walls had markings on them and seemed worn down, and there was also a foul odour coming from the bathroom.

Last of all, I’d rather not live in Nancy’s apartment because the environment isn’t very pleasant. The apartment is old and dirty, and it’s at least a twenty-minute walk from the nearest subway station. The location of the apartment isn’t ideal either, since it takes a really long time to get to the city centre, which wouldn’t be convenient for my commute to work every day. In short, after visiting Nancy’s apartment, I knew that I didn’t want to live there.

  Part 3

Do you think Chinese people like visiting other people’s homes?

I suppose Chinese people enjoy visiting the homes of people they know, since there’s more of a sense of comfort or familiarity.

Why do some people choose to visit others’ homes instead of having meals with others in restaurants?

Well, visiting other people’s homes is a more intimate experience, and it’s also more comfortable for a lot of people.

What do Chinese people do when they visit other people’s homes?

They’re usually very polite and humble, and sometimes they might also bring gifts depending on the occasion.

What would you consider when choosing a place of residence?

Personally, I would consider factors like the location, the rent, and size of the apartment. Ideally, I’d like to find a reasonably priced apartment that’s new, with lots of space, and is close to my workplace.
