　　The table of figures compares the data of people who came from other countries in Europe in 2001.

　　As can be seen from the table, generally, Britain was the country which housed the biggest population of foreigners (1,173,000) while Poland had the minimum of them.

　　In 2001, there were 550,000 Polish living in Britain where the figure was hugely bigger than that of other four nationalities. The table suggests that 1,036,000 people lived in Germany, which was just followed by Britain. Of note is the fact that the population of Italian and Polish was, however, very close, at 440,000 and 430,000 respectively in this country.

　　The total quantities of people from other nations in Italy, Spain and especially Poland were smaller.Apparently, the data indicate that the number of Polish (865,000) topped the list whilst British, the smallest, were at only 68,900 in Spain. This contrasts considerably with the quantity of British people in Italy, with 403,000. At the same time, more Italian people preferred to live in Poland than other types of nationalities.

　　It is quite understandable that people from different backgrounds have diverse perception on the same issue. On the one hand, parents would more tend to hold the view that the aim of education in schools is to benefit them as individuals. On the other hand, some experts who argue against this view comment that the function of education is to nurture the students so as to meet the needs of society.

　　No one would deny the fact that schooling equips the individuals with theoretical knowledge and professional skills, which enables them to be more socially adaptable. Without accumulation of in-depth and wide-range knowledge, the young generations may have trouble in conducting academic research and even finding ideal jobs when they enter the society. In addition, studying in the collective environment, the teenagers are taught to build up the strong sense of competition and cooperation as well as the comprehensive ability. For instance, most schools in China nowadays are so socially diversified that the youngsters are guided to improve the independent thinking skills, crisis-solving andproblem-solving abilities in their school activities and projects.

　　Furthermore, moral education can also set up good outlook of the world. It is frequently reported from the newspaper that some irritable teenagers who currently indulge in Internet or video games fail todistinguish reality from fantasy. In this case, some of them may blindly spread pornographic informationonline to those younger schoolmates or peers.

　　However, it is true that establishing the extracurricular courses and providing professional lectures can hugely cultivate their expertise, which guarantees them to identify their goal earlier and become specialists. In other words, the more interests can be stimulated, the highly-motived in the academic areas. It means the students will tap their potential easily.

　　To conclude, ideally, we tailor our schooling to meet the needs of society and individuals. Only in this way can our society become more prosperous.
