　　In some countries, more and more fathers are staying at home to look after children, while mothers work full-time. What are the reasons and is it positive or negative?

　　As gender inequality in the work place and in society as a whole has lessened over the last one hundred years or so, women have assumed a far more prominent role in many spheres of life. As a consequence, the family dynamic has been subject to huge changes.

　　Traditionally, fathers were seen as the head of the household. In recent years, as the pay gap between men and women has reduced, it is increasingly common for the mother to be the main bread winner in the family. A growing number of men now see themselves as house husbands and are willing to forego personal ambition to act as full-time parents for their children. In many other instances, duties between mother and father are shared, with each assuming an equal weight of responsibility.

　　In some respects, this change has been positive. Women are no longer confined to the narrow gender roles of the past, which in turn creates a larger pool of talent in the work force, leading to a more dynamic economic environment. On the other hand, there is still a broad social expectation that men and women should represent traditional values within the family domain. Fathers are expected to be strong, re-assuring figures, whereas mothers are still regarded as the source of affection and love. Also, family breakdown has become more common in the last fifty years, as the challenges of working life apply a new kind of pressure to the family structure.

　　Overall, the increased freedom of women to make their own choices has been a good thing. While there have been some negative effects of the change in gender roles and family dynamics, a healthy society depends upon freedom of choice being extended to as many people as possible.
