　　Lectures were used as a way of teaching large numbers of students, but now with the development of educational technology, many people think there is no justification for attending lectures. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

　　Nowadays, technological advancements have enabled increasing numbers of people to access information. This has had a profound effect on the way classes are taught and how people are educated. Nonetheless, the idea that lectures are now obsolete doesn’t really stand up to scrutiny.

　　Students are certainly more tech-savvy than they were twenty years ago, with computers and other electronic devices having replaced books and other traditional learning aids. However, students still require a basic level of human interaction to facilitate the learning process, both with their peers and teachers. People like to ask questions about the material they have learned, and, while search engines can help with this, it isn’t the same as the personable way in which a teacher interacts.

　　In that sense, lectures still have an important role to play in the way students are educated, as the human dimension of a lecture adds something that technology is unable to provide. There is no doubt that technology is increasingly playing a part in making certain aspects of teaching and lecturing obsolete, but it would be a mistake to assume technology has replaced lecturers altogether.

　　In conclusion, while it is clear that technological advances have dramatically altered the way in which people learn, technology will never prove an adequate replacement for an interactive classroom or lecturing environment. Perhaps this will change in the future, but I don’t believe there will ever be an appetite to completely eradicate the fundamental relationship between teacher and student.
