　　The newspaper industry has been written off as a thing of the past by many media commentators. Only an older generation that still holds sentimental attachment to newsprint sustains the industry, according to some. Nonetheless, newspapers still play an important role in reporting, just as new media has emerged to challenge the old order.

　　Traditional news journalism (i.e. reporting in broadsheet newspapers) is still held in far higher regard than the kind of news outlets that have emerged on social media. While it is true that many people now get their news from Facebook and other apps, such organisations do not have the same credibility as, say, The Guardian and The Times newspapers.

　　Social media is presently awash with examples of fake news and bogus statistics that are having a worrying effect on people’s habits and voting intentions. Many cite the rise of dangerous, demagogic politicians as one of the main reasons why social media is having a malign effect on western democracies. While it is true to some extent, it is most certainly not the case that social media is exclusively bad. There are countless examples of social media being used to positive effect by campaign groups and the like.

　　Overall, though, I would say that traditional print journalism is still far superior to that one encounters on the internet. The pedigree of reporting is far higher and the accuracy of broadsheet newspapers, while not entirely flawless, is certainly a cut above its online rivals.
