　　There are a number of reasons why people crave wealth and success, ranging from projecting an image of success, acquiring power through financial muscle and altruism. The idea that people may want to get rich to help others is an interesting one and deserves further exploration.

　　One’s primary incentive to get rich is for selfish reasons. It is highly unlikely that someone would set out on the road to wealth and success with philanthropy as their ultimate destination. It may be the case that individuals plan, at some point in their life, to use the wealth they create in the future to help others (Bill Gates is a good example), but it would not be the key motivating factor. The capitalist system is designed intentionally to create a culture of selfishness, which propels individuals towards the creation of wealth.

　　As for whether helping others is important, as opposed to a motivating factor: that is a different matter entirely. It is certainly important for the rich to shoulder a significant burden in terms of helping the poor and disadvantaged. This can be done in a number of ways, including taxation and charity. Should it be an individual’s choice as to whether he or she uses his or her wealth for altruistic purposes? I would say that it should not. Individuals should be compelled to contribute a portion of their wealth to the state through taxation or through other means.

　　Thus, I believe that, while helping others is not the primary motivating factor in getting rich, it is, nonetheless, vital that such a climate is created.
