People today can shop, work and communicate with others via the Internet instead of face-to-face communication. Is it a positive or negative development?

　　The development and extension of internet communication tools has revolutionised the way in which people interact, with arguments abounding on both sides as to whether such a transformation has been positive or negative. There is no doubt that the change to the way we now communicate with each other has shifted irreversibly, but it is still unclear whether this a good or a bad thing.

　　The evolution of chatting apps such as Whatsapp, Line and Wechat has enabled people from all corners of the globe to come together online and interact, from places as far apart as Montreal and Delhi. It has never been easier to communicate with someone than it is now. Families separated by great distances as a consequence of mass migration and economic necessity can stay in touch at any time of day in any location, so long as the individuals in question have access to a stable internet connection. Undoubtedly, this development has been positive.

　　Nonetheless, in recent years, there has been an alarming surge in online abuse, targeted at public figures as well as ordinary members of the public. Online bullying has become such a serious problem in some parts of the world that governments have introduced legislation to prosecute individuals deemed to have affected harm to claimants. A rise in suicide among teenagers as a result of bullying online is a case in point, suggesting that such legislation is fundamental to the health of society. Many attributes the fact that online interaction alters the way in which we perceive each other, thus dehumanising the people we speak to, to the disturbing trend mentioned above.

　　In conclusion, I would say that while internet interaction has had a broadly positive effect, there are still some disturbing elements to the change in the way we communicate with other, and these must be addressed as a matter of seriousness.
