　　Home schooling has long been associated with parents of religious faith who do not trust the public-school system to provide their children with the spiritual guidance they wish them to have. While such an approach has critics, the issue of home schooling is not black and white. There are both negative and positive aspects to this.

　　With regard to the pluses of home schooling, parents can provide a level of educational support and attention for their children that teachers in large classes cannot offer. Studies indicate that children perform better in classes with fewer than 20 students. This is because teachers are able to provide more individual support to each student, something they cannot offer in classes of 50 or 60 students. In that sense, home schooling can be better than the public-school system.

　　The caveat to this approach is that parents may not have the sufficient qualifications to offer their children the kind of educational support they need in order to progress to higher education. Additionally, children studying individually at home are denied the vital social interaction they need in order to develop the people skills so essential for later life. In that sense, home schooling puts children at a major disadvantage.

　　On balance, I would say that home schooling does provide sufficient enough advantages to justify opting out of the school system. One of the key skills children need to harness is the ability to interact with and show respect towards others. They can only do this in a conventional educational setting.
