　　The allocation of state funds to various sectors of society is an issue that has been of increasing importance in recent years, as the global economy has slowed and many countries have introduced policies of austerity to eliminate national debt. Public services have suffered as a consequence of brutal cuts, as have other areas of the public realm, including the welfare state.

　　Whether or not governments should provide money for art initiatives is a question some believe is no longer of great significance, given the pressures currently brought to bear on the public purse. Proponents of the arts have argued for decades that the arts no longer receive sufficient funding, and that important areas of heritage and culture have been neglected. Others contend that factors such as education and health are of greater importance.

　　I would argue that art and culture are of vital importance to the health of society. Countries that promote the arts and create space for young artists, writers and musicians to flourish are far healthier and robust societies where such things are not permitted. One only has to look at the commercialisation of the media and entertainment industries in western democracies to see what negative ramifications arise from this. Indulgence in reality TV and inflammatory news broadcasting may be entertaining for the population, but it is neither informative nor democratic to tell people what they want to hear.

　　In that sense, I believe governments should certainly make efforts to promote art and culture initiatives through public spending, while also prioritising key areas such as health, education and defence.
